Udagama, located in the Embilipitiya area was inundated on Thursday February 4, following a leak that was reported from a canal known as the Dakunu Maha Ela in Udawalawa.

It was confirmed by the Mahaweli Authority that it had suspended the release of water to the canal, following the leak.

Water had begun to leak from the sluice gate of the southern canal of Udawalawa since early Thursday morning, inundating the whole of Udagama in Embilipitiya including houses, farmlands, paddy fields and banana cultivations.

According to Thilak Ranasinghe,  Deputy Resident Manager of the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka for the Walawa Zone, a caving in of a gate on the canal had resulted in the issue. Officers from the Mahaweli Authority arrived at the scene and made a valiant effort to renovate the sluice gate.
