Convening a media briefing on Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence commented on the Indian Naval Vessel , the INS Vikramaditya making a port call in Colombo, and other vessels that will arrive in the future.
At the briefing, journalists quizzed Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence over matters related to Avant Garde.
When questioned regarding the legality of the Sea Marshals, who have been trained at Special Task Force camps, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence stated that there is no point commenting only on Avant Garde, because Avant Garde is one company that provided such a service, amongst 60 to 70 companies that work with shipping companies.
“We do not need to only speak about this company because it was at the centre of controversy”
Recently it was reported that the Sri Lanka Navy must pay millions in compensation to Avant Garde, and when questioned regarding this situation, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi stated that compensation will not be paid to anyone. And it is Avant Garde that has to pay around 700 million rupees for the services provided by the Sri Lankan Navy
Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy,Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne noted that the necessary step are being taken and revenue is not a big deal for the Navy, as it is national security that is top priority.
