The current talk on the political sphere is centered  around whether a new party is being formed.

News1st, revealed last Monday, that discussions for the preparation of a new political party, were held at the residence of North Western Provincial Councillor D.B Herath, on January 16, which saw the participation of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and former minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Representatives of nineteen local government bodies in the Gampaha District, except the Negombo Municipal Council, convened a media briefing on Monday, January 25.

Former chairman of the Gampaha Pradeshiya Sabha, Ranjith Gunawardena stated that they will win the upcoming local government elections by contesting under the new party formed by Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He added that all details, including the leader and symbol of the new party, will be announced following the official declaration of the local government elections.

Another media briefing which saw the participcation of Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, and a number of local government representatives was held in Kalutara Monday, January 25.

Minister of Professional Development and Vocational Training, Mahinda Samarasinghe stated that those who commit acts such as taking membership in a new party, will be carrying out a major betrayal towards SLFP.

Members of leftist parties in the UPFA who held ministerial positions in the former government, also commented on the matter at a media briefing.

Politburo Member of the Communist Party, Chandrasiri Gajadeera noted that they haven’t informed them if another party is being established as it does not concern the MPs in the current parliamentary groups.

He added that these political parties, do not need to know what all other political parties discuss, for what purpose, for what policy and for what framework a new party is being established.

He went on to note that parties cannot be formed like in fairytales and explained further that even though he is in the parliament he is not aware of such a party.

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaiyake Kumaratunga also spoke to the media about the new party.

As journalists raised questions  as to whether the new party is being formed under the Lotus symbol. She also stated that she does not know what Mahinda Rajapaksa is “up to.”

Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that there is no party being formed. He said that they are “just false stories made to incite fear in the SLFP to woo them over and win the election.”
