The Revenant” is expected to top the North American weekend box office from Friday (January 22) through Sunday (January 24), despite three new films debuting in theaters. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Revenant” is predicted to add as much as 21 million dollars to its global earnings of 162 million.

Opening this weekend is “Dirty Grandpa,” which stars Zac Efron and Robert De Niro as a straight-laced, young man who embarks on a road trip with his foul-mouthed grandfather. The film has earned poor reviews. It’s expected to earn 12 million dollars

Also new this weekend is “The Boy,” a horror film about a woman who is hired to baby-sit an elderly couple’s life-size doll. It’s expected to earn 11 million dollars.

The third film debuting this weekend is “The 5th Wave,” starring Chloe Grace Moretz as a teenage girl who must survive in a world of increasingly devastating alien attacks.  It’s set to make 10 million this weekend.

Holding over from previous weeks, “Ride Along 2” should add another 16 million to its international earnings of 48 million dollars; and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is predicted to earn an additional 16 million added to its global haul of 1.8 billion dollars
