A 21-year-old law student in Gurgaon city of India’s northern Haryana state was allegedly raped by her mother’s live-in partner. In her complaint, the victim also accused her mother of beating her up.
The victim, who moved from western Rajasthan state to Gurgaon in 2008 with her mother, is now a final year law student and practicing under a lawyer associated with a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
The victim claimed on Friday, January 22 that she was raped on December 15, 2015. The victim also claimed that when she tried to lodge a complaint with the police, instead of co-operating, they tried to hush-up the matter and repeatedly asked her to go back home
The victim has approached a local court regarding the matter and a complaint was finally registered on Friday by the police on the orders of the Chief Judicial Magistrate.
However, the victim’s mother and her live-in partner maintain the charges against them were fabricated and the victim filed the complaint under the influence of the NGO officials. Furthermore, the victim’s mother has filed a counter complaint against the members of the NGO, where the victim is currently residing.
The annual reports by the National Crime Records Bureau said there were 337,922 reports of violence against women such as rape, molestation, abduction and cruelty by husbands in 2014, up 9 percent in 2013. The number of rapes in the country also rose by 9 percent to 33,707 in 2014.
