Parliamentarian Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thera says that a special court for the Sangha should be established to take decisions in relation to the Sangha.
The parliamentarian made this statement while addressing a convention at the National Library in Colombo.
Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera stated that if all Buddhist clergy is in favour of this act, then passing it is democratic. He said that however, even though it is democratic, it is not the reality nor is it completely true.
“Most often than not, members of the Sangha do not have the Bhikkhu leadership,” he said and further noted:
That is the situation today and the issues of the Buddhist clergy were heard at these Sangha Courts. And so there was a strong Sangha Court which was far more exemplary that the government law, which is why one should be established.
“This should not be established for politicians nor parliamentarians but for the Maha Sangha only,” he pointed out.
