Various views were raised on the apparent creation of a new party, under the leadership of the former president. A discussion took place at the Wariyapola residence of UPFA Northwestern Provincial Councilor D.B. Herath on Saturday. where the former president and Basil Rajapaksa also attended the meeting.

People’s Party Leader, Asanka Navaratne, commenting on the meeting, said that a new party under the stewardship of Mahinda Rajapaksa will be formed.

“Looking at how the people feel, I assume that one will be created,” said the former president, when he was questioned regarding the matter. He added that media personnel create stories and portrays the innocent as criminals, and the criminals as the innocent

Journalists raised similar questions from MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara who was also present for the event.

UPFA MP,Vasudeva Nanayakkara noted that the party has already entered into Sri Lankan politics with a different identity and now what is left to do is to take respective measures for the next step.

“We are blessed with the leadership of Mahinda Rajapaksa, ” he said

Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations,W.D.J. Seneviratne noted that some are acting in a manner  dividing and destroying the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and driving the party membership towards their way. He said these are the persons who call for an alternative party to contest the polls. He said that the regional politicians and political leaders must understand this situation.

Former Senior Minister, Athauda Seneviratne noted that it is not those with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party who are paving the way to destroy the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, because it is being done by Wimal Weerawansa and another who is called Gammanpila.

” I do not know which side he is on,” he said and went on to further note that “they are the ones who speak of this change and they have dragged this on for so long, and it seems that even Mahinda cannot get away from them.”

He also stated that some aspire to destroy the party, let the United National Party win and after around 20 years to bring Namal Rajapaksa forward.

Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development,Mahinda Amaraweera stated:

There is a group that wants to split the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and several groups not with the SLFP have taken the leadership towards this because they have no other alternative, and not only have they decided to split the SLFP but have also reached an accord with the United National Party.

“The United National Party had saved them from certain allegations they faced ” he said

State Minister of International Trade, Sujeewa Senasinghe noted that, politically, this would come as an advantage and it appears that the SLFP will split into pieces

“We do not assist in those acts.” he said and added that Mahinda Rajapaksa has undertaken that task and it is the responsibility of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party members to protect the party.
