Several media outlets reported that the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in United Kingdom, Dr. Chris Nonis was assaulted by the then Monitoring MP of the Ministry of External Affairs, Sajin de Vass Gunawardena.

On October 2, 2014,  when inquiries were made on several occasions, Dr. Nonis refused to comment on the incident, affirming that as a diplomat it is not suitable to comment on the happening.  However, speaking to News 1st, Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Chris Nonis confirmed that he handed in his letter of resignation from the post of High Commissioner, following an assault.

Dr. Chris Nonis’s letter of resignation was accepted by the Ministry of External Affairs, and steps were taken to commence an investigation based on a complaint made against the Secretary of the Ministry.

Late Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero stated that the most harsh punishment for a person who committed a serious wrong in the country is to give a post of Ambassador.

On  March 6, 2015 the Former Sri Lankan High Commissioner in the UK, Dr. Chris Nonis was appointed Presidential Advisor on International Affairs, following the election of the new government. However, no report has been made on the action taken against the injustice that he had to undergo.

He added that persons who represent the state must be protected and their professions too, and went on to note that it is far more serious than the misuse of government vehicles.
