The final phase of declaring the North and East as a landmine-free zone, is currently taking place.
When News 1st made inquiries, Military Spokesperson Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said that an operation is underway to clear a landmass of 64 square kilometres identified as the last area containing landmines buried during the time of the conflict.
Landmines are being cleared in the Mullaitivu, Muhamalai and Trincomalee areas. International de-mining teams and de-mining units from the Sri Lanka Army are engaged in this operation.
