On April 2008, Sri Lanka celebrated the start of construction on the Uma Oya Multipurpose Project in Alikotaara in Wellawaya. However, seven years later, a leak was reported, four kilometres in to the tunnel that was constructed,  in Karandagolla. Following the environmental and social issues that had arisen as a result of the Uma Oya Project, the government decided to suspend the work at the site until a proper study was conducted.

Negative impact of the Uma Oya Multi-purpose Development Project:

– Landslides
– Cave-in
– Schools shut down
– Wells dried-up
– Cracks on the walls of houses
– Paddy lands abandoned
– Public continue to protest against the project
