Multiple subjects were discussed and explained at a media briefing convened on Thursday Jan. 14 to announce Cabinet decisions.
Theravada Bhikkhu Kathikawatha Bill
Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana Wijeyadasa Rajapakse stated that the matter has been discussed for a long period of time as the Maha Sangha had presented facts over the years, citing that there was no legal power on the matter. The minister added that the bill, which was drafted by the previous government, was amended to be rid of shortcomings and presented to Parliament. The minister also noted that only the head monks of the nikayas or chapters will be allowed to make decisions.

Avant Garde
Journalists raised questions on the Avant Garde issue, asking what decisions have been made on the allegations against Solicitor General Suhanda Gamlath. Speaking once again, Min. Wijeyadasa Rajapakse stated that the president will be making revelations at the appropriate time. More questions were raised by journalists, asking if the Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana are in fact connected to the Avant Garde issue.

Proposed constitutional reforms
Speaking on proposed constitutional reforms, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne explained that the prime minister presented this motion to Cabinet and that it was approved and presented to Parliament as a motion by the government
