A youth receiving treatment for serious injuries after falling from the top floor of a building during a clash in Embilipitiya succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, Jan 7.

The clash that led to the death of the youth, identified as 29-year-old father of one Sumith Prasanna, broke out during a party at a residence in Embilipitiya. The incident also left four police officers and three other civilians injured.

Locals in the area who were outraged by the death of the youth, protested against the police by closing down all shops in the Embilipitiya town and engaging in a demonstration. During the protest the residents burnt tyres, charging that the police were involved in the death of the 29-year-old youth.

The incident became a topic of debate in Parliament on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

The Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake voiced his views reminding that over the past, persons were killed when they were escorted to show hidden weapons and as well as when they were to be arrested. He added that the allegations made by the locals against the police over the current incident must be taken in to consideration.

Also speaking on the matter, Minister of Law & Order and Southern Development Sagala Rathnayake stated that the views raised from the Embilipitiya Police and the victims as well as the injured party are contradictory. He noted that according to the victims of the incident, the death was caused when the police officers pushed the victim off the third-floor of the house. However, the minister added, the police say the victim had attempted to flee by breaking through the glass and had fallen off the building. Minister Rathnayake also stated that there is not sufficient evidence to prove that the police had pushed the victim off the building.

In response to Minister Sagala Rathnayake, Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake retaliated saying that the victim was not Spider Man to jump off the third floor by breaking through the glass — but an ordinary youth. He added that the report by police was prepared to protect themselves.
