Former Supreme Court Judge Sarath de Abrew granted bail

Former Supreme Court Judge Sarath de Abrew who was charged with sexual assault was released on bail on Tuesday when the case pertaining to this matter was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Pathman Surasena.

The judge ordered that Sarath de Abrew be released on a cash bail of Rs.100,000 and a surety bail of  Rs.200,000.

The former Supreme Court judge pleaded not guilty to the charge filed against him.The Court ordered that the case be taken up for hearing again on  May 23.

Previously, Sarath de Abrew was sent notices to appear before the Colombo High Court on Tuesday.

Earlier, Sarath de Abrew filed a fundamental rights petition at the Supreme Court citing that the officers of the Criminal Investigation Division and the Attorney General had acted in an unlawful and arbitrary manner in filing action against him, and that his fundamental rights had been violated by this move.

The petition was dismissed on Monday, as the Supreme Court refused to grant leave to proceed after it was taken up for consideration before a bench comprising of Chief Justice K. Sri Pavan, and Justices Priyantha Jayawardena and Upali Abeyaratne.
