Travel on Gurugalla Bridge along the Thalduwa -Amithirigala Road in Avissawella has been restricted once again due to the threat of the bridge submerging. Police urge travellers using this road to use alternate route.

Police said that commuters who use the Thalduwa – Amithirigala road could use the Colombo – Hanwella Samanabedda road, the Kosgama Pugoda road, the Ruwanvella Urapola road and the Anguruwella Warakapola road as alternative routes.

Vehicular movement on the Gurugalla bridge was first restricted due to the threat of sinking in on Dec. 30, 2015. After inspections carried out by the Kegalle Road Development Authority on a rupture on the bridge, it was reopened for use the next day.

However last evening again, movement on the bridge was limited to bicycles and motorcycles only. Our correspondent stated that this has severely inconvenienced commuters of this road.

News 1st inquired about this matter from Road Development Authority. RDA Director General Pushpa Gunarathna said that they intend to complete the renovation of the bridge within a month. He added that until then, the bridge will be temporarily closed.
