The Department of Forest Conservation says it will complete its acquisition of land surrounding the Sinharaja Forest this year.
General of the Department Anura Sathurusinghe stated that 1,000 hectares of land would be acquired under this plan.
However, he noted that the land they would be taking over comes under the purview of the Land Reclamation Commission and are private lands. He added that the land in several areas in the Kalavana Divisional Secretariat are being taken over as a result of the deforestation taking place. Newsfirst made several revelations in the past few days with regard to this.
Sathurusinghe stated that the Land Reforms Commission instructed that the lands that do not pay taxes can be taken over. However, he noted that officers have been instructed to observe possible deforestation activities taking place in the lands bordering the Sinharaja Forest, which are to be acquired.
