Former Minister of Finance Ronnie de Mel was felicitated at an event in Colombo on Wednesday, January 9, 2016.

The event was organised by the Colombo Branch of the Past Scholars of the University of Ruhuna, and was held under the auspices of Senior Prof. S.G.J.N Senanayake, Vice chancellor of the University of Ruhuna.

The services of Ronnie de Mel, in establishing the University of Ruhuna, was appreciated at the event. De Mel is incidentally the Finance Minister who presented the budget at many occasions more than any other Sri Lankan Finance Minister. He is also known for taking the stride towards introducing the open economy.

“My health situation is very weak. I am not engaged in politics and it’s been a while since my retirement,” stated the former finance minister.

He added that for the past two weeks there has been a difficulty in his sight, but that despite these issues, he attended the event because of the love he has for the University of Ruhuna and the People of Ruhuna and said that this “will never change.”
