Today, 8th January 2016 marks the 1st year anniversary of President Maithripala Sirisena’s victory at the 2015 Presidential Poll.

Pallewatte Gamaralalage Maithripala Yapa Sirisena, born 3 September 1951 was conferred the title of the 7th executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on the 8th of January 2015.

After the 2015 Presidential Elections were announced, the then Minister of Health and General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Maithripala Sirisena made an unprecedented move to become the Common Candidate together with the collective of Major Opposition Political Parties.

On the 21st of November 2014 the now President and then Presidential Candidate said “I will definitely win the Presidential Elections with the support of the people and their votes ”

The Battle for the Presidency drew to a close with Maithripala Sirisena being elected as the 06th Executive President of Sri Lanka.The President and the Prime Minister were elected from the two major political parties of the country. These two parties came together to bring about the Consensual Government and over the past one year, the concept was made a reality. At a time when there was political transformation in the country, Sri Lanka appeared at the United Nations Human Rights Council and saw Sri Lanka gain victory at the Session.During the past year, many International leaders met with the President and promised to support Sri Lanka’s new political journey.

As Promised, President Maithripala Sirisena also took measures to create constitutional amendments.

Though President Sirisena was not from the Sri Lankan political elite, his motive to change the course of politics in the country following the declaration of his candidacy for presidency was lauded by many. A political system of Good Governance which was the primary objective the President Sirisena led Government, served as a springboard for a stronger democracy in the country.

President Sirisena had 40 years of political experience under his belt and was brought to the helm following his announcement as the common candidate for the Presidential election in 2015.

The Commitment which was pledged by President Maithripala Sirisena on a day like today, to uphold law and order in the country and make Sri Lanka a better nation is remembered as a day of freedom and true democracy.

“I assure you that, like the commitment I made on the 8th of January, I will dedicate my life to build our motherland, Sri Lanka as a glorious nation ..” – Maithripala Sirisena
