According to a recent archaeological study, Sri Lanka’s Homo sapiens began consuming rice 6000 years ago.

This fact was confirmed when grains of cereals including paddy were found during excavations conducted in a cave belonging to the pre-historic age in the Illukkumbura area in Balangoda.

Raj Somadeva, senior professor of the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology at Kelaniya University, said this finding is of great significance to the history of rice consumption in Sri Lanka.
