Investigations underway into shootings in Dickwella, Metiwela, Hikkaduwa

Incidents of  shooting have taken place in Dickwella, Metiwela and Hikkaduwa

An individual was seriously injured in a shooting took place at Bathigama, Dickwella. The Police Media Unit said that an unidentified gunman has fired shots at a house at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. The victim, a 26-year-old carpenter, was admitted to the ICU of the Matara General Hospital.

The cause of the shooting is yet to be determined. Investigations have commenced to identify the gunman.

Police Media Spokesperson, ASP Ruwan Gunasekera stated that the Dickwella police is carrying out the investigations. He stated that over the past few months, shootings and murders were reported but there is no connection between these incidents. He also stated that suspects have also been arrested over some incidents and several gunmen have also been identified.

A Sergeant Major of Panagoda Camp was targeted and shot at around 11 a.m. in the Meetiyagoda -Thelwatte  in Hikkaduwa.

Police had stated that the sergeant major was followed by  motorcycle while returning home with his three-year-old child. Thus, the Sergeant Major has changed his route and tried to escape by fleeing, leaving behind his  motorcycle.  But a person on the  motorcycle that was trailing him had allegedly shot him and fled.

Investigations are being carried out by the Meetiyagoda police.

In another incident, shots were fired at one of the suspects in the murder case of the former chairman of the Rathgama Pradeshiya Sabha in Metiwela on Tuesday.

According to Police Media Spokesperson, the persons who carried out the shooting on Tuesday were wearing full- faced helmets. It has also been observed that the suspects in the shooting that occurred on Wednesday had also worn full-faced helmets. Investigation are underway to determine if these two incidents are connected.
