Chairman of the Mahabodhi Society Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thero celebrated his 66th Birthday today, Jan. 5, 2016.
An alms giving was organized at the Yoshida Shokanji International School in Sapugaskanda on Tuesday morning in line with the 66th birthday of Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thero. A group of theros also engaged in a ‘pindapatha’ procession inline with the celebrations held today.
A delegation including the Social Justice Minister of India’s Maharashtra State Raj Kumar arrived in the country to attend the event organized to mark the birthday of Venerable Banagala Upathissa Thero.
The annual prize giving ceremony of the Yoshida Shokanji International School and a felicitation event for Venerable Banagala Upathissa Thero was also held this evening at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. A new channel, Ashok TV was also launched at the occasion.
Born on the Jan. 5, 1950 in a remote village in Deniyaya, Venerable Banagala Upatissa Thero was ordained as a Buddhist monk at the age of 17 under the tutelage of Venerable Hedigalle Pangyasara Thero.
Venerable Bangala Upathissa Thero completed the Sharsthravedi and Sharsthrapathi degrees while at the Sanchi Temple in India and became popular for his service to the Sasana and Society. The venerable thero who educates children in the country through the Yoshida Shokanji International School continues to carry out the service of Anagarika Dharmala through the Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka.
