A number of Saudi Arabia’s allies have joined in on diplomatic action against Iran following the attack on Saudi embassy in Tehran over the execution of a Shia Muslim cleric.
Both Bahrain and Sudan have severed ties with Iran while the UAE has downgraded its diplomatic team. According to Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir trade links with Iran would be cut and air traffic links stopped but he went on to note that travelling to holy sites in Mecca and Medina would still be allowed to enter.
Saudi Arabia and Iran’s relations have been strained over different geo-political issues such as the interpretations of Islam, aspirations for leadership of the Islamic world, oil export policy, relations with the US and the West and the rivalry is further fueled by ongoing conflict in the region with the two nations backing opposite sides in Syria and Yemen.
