Europe step up security before New Year celebrations

Security is being increased in major European cities ahead of New Year celebrations with authorities being wary of possible terror plots.

New Year fireworks and festivities have been cancelled in the capital Brussels,Belgian because of an alert and extra measures of precaution are being taken in Paris,London,Berlin and Moscow.

Security services in Turkey say that a a major plan to attack celebrations in Ankara has been thwarted while Austrian Police stated that a “friendly intelligence service” had tipped them off that major European capitals were at risk of being attacked over the holiday period.

Brussels on Alert

Belgian president has justified the decision to cancel celebration of the coming new year based on ‘information they have received’. Earlier this week police arrested two suspects along with the seizure of propaganda for so-called Islamic State (IS) as well as military clothing and computer equipment. Belgian has been on high alert since the devastating attack on Paris in November where several of the perpetrators have been believed to be based in Belgian.
