The Colombo Crimes Division recorded a statement from Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa on Dec. 30.
MP Namal Rajapaksa was summoned to the Colombo Crimes Division to record a statement with regard to an investigation where a phone call had been made to former Air Force Commander Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrema several years ago, using the name of Namal Rajapaksa. Former Chairman of the Ampara Urban Council Indika Nalin Jayawickreme was charged over the incident.
Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that MP Rajapaksa was summoned as per the advice of the attorney general to file a case over the matter.
The MP dismissed the ongoing investigations into him saying that he did not find it a problem and added they are “now used to providing statements”.
Fielding a question from a reporter on whether he was involved in the formation of a new political party, Rajapaksa denied any such plans but said he was working towards strengthening the opposition. He also denied that his father, the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, had made a decision to form a new political entity.
“The son is obliged to follow his father,” he concluded.
