The Joint Trade Union Alliance of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board says they have decided to begin an islandwide strike on Monday morning.
Employees of the water board have been refraining from maintenance activities since Saturday morning in protest against the reduction of their bonuses. Due to the protest of the water board employees over their bonuses, many consumers in certain areas lost access to an uninterrupted supply of water.
Residents of the Mirissa – Udupita village are facing a scarcity of water due to a ruptured underground water pipe at the Mirissa Water Pumping Facility.
The rupture of the pipeline — which belongs to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board close to the Delgoda – Kanduboda Meditating Centre opposite the Ayurveda Hospital — has left the entire area without water. People in Chilaw too had to suffer due to the scarcity of water caused by a leakage of a pipeline.
