Residents of Meethotamulla staged a demonstration on Dec. 27 demanding solutions to the longstanding issue of garbage in the area.
The protesters charge that the garbage problem poses many health hazards and has also damaged the reputation of the area.
The demonstrators commenced a protest march, demanding the representatives who were appointed by their votes to raise thier voice over this issue. The protest march ended at the entrance of the garbage disposal area as police barricades were placed in the area.

Speaking to Newsfirst, Western Provincial Councilor Susil Kindelpitiya said that he is in talks with the relevant officials over the request of the people on the matter.
Meanwhile in the latest developments a group of demonstrators who were protesting by staging a fast against a move to expand the garbage disposal area in Meetotamulla have been attacked.
The demonstrators charge that the attack was launched by a group including the Chairman of the Kollonawa Urban Council.
