The death toll from the accident that took place this evening in Nelumdeniya on the Colombo – Kandy road has risen to four.
A tipper truck transporting sand toppled on to a van travelling from Colombo to Kandy resulting in the tragedy. Police said that three children who suffered injuries were admitted to the Kegalle Hospital.
Police also added that seven persons were travelling in the van at the time, and four of them had died. The victims were two men aged 88 and 55 and two women aged 68 and 40, all residents of Nagoda, Kalutara.
The driver of the tipper truck had fled following the accident and investigations are underway to apprehend him.
