Water board employees to go on islandwide token strike

The Joint Trade Union Alliance of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board had convened a media briefing in Colombo on Thursday, December 24 to express opposition to slashing of their salary bonuses.

Co-convener of the Joint Trade Union Alliance NWSDB, Upali Ratnayake, stated that they have informed the administration since they cannot accept the slash on their bonus as they will continue their trade union action until it is been given.

He added that it will come into effect as a token strike where maintenance employees will refrain from reporting for duties on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 26 27, as they will carry on the essential services by taking into consideration the inconvenience to the general public.

He went on to note that on Monday, December 28, all water board employees islandwide would engage in a three-hour protest movement from 9 a.m. to noon. He added that they would resort to a major trade union action if their bonuses are not given

Co-convener of the Joint Trade Union Alliance, NWSDB, Chandrasiri Perera stated that the Chairman of the Water Board who has been playing “Mr. Bean” until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Decemeber 23 had lied noting that a bonus of 37,500 rupees would be given, but in the end saying that only Rs. 25,000 will be given.

He added that the Finance Minister must be removed from his position since the he cannot function properly. On Tuesday a group of airport employees staged a demonstration charging that their bonuses too had been curtailed. Thereafter the authorities agreed to provide the bonuses.
