Owing to the long weekend and Christmas holidays, the working class returns to their villages while the folk gather at popular southern beach destinations for celebrations.
According to police, the Matara-Godagama interchange was congested since large groups of vehicles were travelling towards the southern region of the island.
The police added that the traffic queue had extended to 3 km from the Godagama exit. The Road Development Authority (RDA) requested motorists to use the Imaduwa, Kokmaduwa and Pinnaduwa exits, to reduce the traffic congestion. However, towards this evening, traffic eased on the Southern Expressway.
