A sub inspector of police assigned to the Haputale Police Station has been arrested for soliciting a bribe of Rs.20,000.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Briber or Corruption said the police officer was arrested during an investigation launched on a tip-off received by the commission on its hotline 1 9 5 4.
According to the commission, the sub inspector of police had solicited the bribe to provide a police report to an owner of a three-wheeler that was previously destroyed by fire, in order to claim insurance.
The commission further said the police officer, who has previously demanded Rs.30,000 was nabbed while accepting Rs.20,000. The arrested sub inspector is due to be produced before the Bandarawela Magistrate court on Saturday, December 12.
