SL Ambassador speaks of measures taken over maid sentenced to death in Saudi

The Foreign Ministries of Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia have commenced talks to seek clemency for the Sri Lankan house maid who was sentenced to be stoned to death in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Sri Lankan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Azmi Thassim, speaking to News 1st, said that the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment was informed in writing that legal steps relating to the woman in question are being taken.

The letter adds that the Embassy is awaiting the next hearing of the appeal which may be taken in a month, or two month period.

Sri Lankan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Azmi Thassim stated: Through the Sri Lankan Mission, the Government of Sri Lanka and the ministries have taken all possible measures. We are providing legal assistance to the woman in question to seek an appeal against the sentence. We have also taken measures to observe and monitor the processes that are being taken, and we will continue to take the measures.

He further statedL

The Government of Sri Lanka has provided us with assistance. The Foreign Ministry is also taking the respective diplomatic measures on this matter while we seek clemency for this woman. The Sri Lankan Embassy and the government and the ministry are working on this matter
The Ambassador also commented on the information that had been spreading that the woman was to be stoned to death on Thursday.

The Sri Lankan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia also stated:

As far as I know, and according to the legal avenues here, no such thing had taken place. This is wrong information. It is false information that had been spreading on the matter.
