CHOGM 2015 gets underway in Malta

Queen Elizabeth II declared opened the 24th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta on Friday alongside a colourful ceremony attended by world leaders, gathered for pressing talks on a number topics.

The ceremony held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta commenced at 02:30 p.m. Sri Lankan time.

Former Chairman of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting , Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Current Chair, the Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat welcomed the Heads of Government and Representatives of member nations.

Heads of Government and Representatives from the 53 nations of the Commonwealth attended the event and the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting kicked off with the aim “Adding Global Value”.

Former Chairperson, President Sirisena addressed the meeting. The President said:

Sri Lanka is a founding member of the Commonwealth and we are very pleased about its growth over the past few years,

The President added:

The influence of the Commonwealth had helped to guide the political and social behaviour of all our members .The common values that share bring us together.

Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat stated:

I believe that we should have an agenda with clear priorities for the next two years.

He added:

We live at a time where young people within our Commonwealth and beyond are attracted to join terrorist groups that want to destroy democracy and our way of life.

Her Royal Highness,Queen Elizabeth II noted that it is rightly said that the Commonwealth is an Association underscored by values,but meaningful progress demands that those values be put into practice .

She went on to note that mobilizing the vast network of civil society groups who work to strengthen health , laws and governance across all our countries.

Sri Lanka the chair of the Commonwealth Heads of Government for 2 years, officially handed over the position to the Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat. In addition, Kamalesh Sharma who served as the Commonwealth Secretary General for a period of 7 years , will step down from the post this year.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2015 which commenced today, will conclude on the 29th.
