The Cabinet has approved the president’s proposal to abolish the Executive Presidency, and to introduce a new electoral system.
Minister Sajith Premadasa, speaking following the cabinet meeting, saidthe cabinet had decided to appoint a sub-committee headed by the Prime Minister, in this regard.
Cabinet convened at the Presidential Secretariat under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday morning.
At this Cabinet meeting, a cabinet paper on abolishing the Executive Presidency and introducing a new constitution were presented.
President Sirisena on Tuesday announced that two cabinet papers will be presented on the matter.
The Central Working Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party approved the move on Tuesday night.
