According to the National Council for Road Safety, on average, eight people are killed in motor accidents each day.
Chairman of the Council, Dr Sisira Kodagoda said that the number of motor accidents have increased drastically over the years.
He added that 2363 people have been killed in such accidents during the course of this year alone.
Meanwhile, today has been declared the National Memorial day in remembrance of those who lost their lives in road accidents.
It goes under the theme, Let us minimise road accidents and protect the lives of the innocent.
Dr Sisira Kodagoda said that a special programme is in place in line with the memorial day to educate the drivers.
