The Maldivian Government has confirmed the arrest of a Sri Lankan on the suspicion of attempting to assassinate the President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Confirming the arrest for the first time, the Maldivian government issued an information brief stating that the arrested individual was a 27-year-old Sri Lankan.

According to Maldivian Media, the Maldives Criminal Court has further remanded the Sri Lankan sniper who was arrested in Maldives last month.

According to the Maldivian police on November 7,  the individual was detained on  October 24,  2015, on suspicion. of attempting to assassinate the President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

According to the Police, the Sri Lankan national was hired by some Maldivians to carryout the operation.

The information brief added that Maldives Police is investigating the case in close collaboration with the Sri Lankan Police.

Initially, the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry stated that the arrested individual did not have any connection to the Sri Lankan Military.

A high-ranking official of the Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka, speaking to News 1st, stated that the name and other details of the suspect cannot be released as the investigations are still ongoing.
