A group of ministers conducted a session to explain the government’s mid term economic programme on Monday, November 09.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Harsha de Silva stated that their objective is to take forward the economic reforms introduced by J.R. Jayewardene.
He went on to state:
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has made a direct statement stating that they can only take forward development activity by ensuring Sri Lanka as competitive in the global market.
He also stated:
We can achieve economic development through our export economy.
Deputy Minister of Public Enterprise Development, Eran Wickremaratne stated:
The act of gaining capital should be done through allocations from the budget. If it is not possible to make capital allocations through budget, it should be generated through the people.
He went on to note that Bankrupt politicians state that they are going to cover the capital deficit by selling institutions to various people which is a baseless lie, that has been going on for twenty to thirty years.
The Prime Minister had clearly stated in Parliament that these would be properly managed and turned into profit-making institutions and that the profit would go to the people. These are the new methods being utilised in the world.
Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training, Mahinda Samarasinghe stated:
In the PM’s statement special mentions were made of skill development.
He went on to note that their ministry has to take up the responsibility of generating one million jobs which cannot be granted in the public sector.
They have to embark on this journey with a programme to create jobs in the private sector or send a much larger amount of skilled labour abroad, to fulfill this goal.
