Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister (Dr.) Rajitha Senaratne, at a media briefing on Friday stated that the police did not make a mistake, and it is they who are mistaken  – ‘and this is the Attorney General’s report and this is the report which also states that Gotabaya Rajapaksa will have to be arrested.’

He said:

I took my seat as a member of the National Executive Council and the Attorney General’s Department informed us that arrests will have to be made and it is a criminal act. It was said that all those connected will be arrested by Thursday and the following Tuesday we questioned why the arrests were not made. Then they said that the Tamil translation of the indictment was not ready and then that week also passed. So, we again questioned this on the Tuesday that followed, and then they said that this is not a criminal matter by a civil matter.

He further stated:

The AG’s Department said that a certain minister had his influence on them and at that time, the Prime Minister had asked two ministers with legal backgrounds to assist the Attorney General’s Department. One of those Ministers appeared for the cases on behalf of Avant Garde and he had asked the AG’s Department to not object this matter.

He went on to state:

This Government was established because the civil organisations and the other organisations all wanted to put a complete stop to the corruption in the country …”

When questioned if some ministers have obtained money from Avant Garde to undermine the investigations, Minister Senaratne replied “You are also intelligent as I am. So, think about this situation and the reasons behind this”.
