An individual suspected to be involved in the assassination attempt of Maldivian President Abdulla Yamin Gayoom, has been arrested in Nedimala, Dehiwala.

The Police Media Unit reported that the suspect, a Maldivian national, was arrested on Sunday night, with the assistance of officers of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Spokesperson of the Department of Immigration and Emigration Lakshan Dias said that the suspect, who was in the country by violating visa laws, was handed over to the Maldivian authorities on the morning of Monday November 2.

Maldives police arrested seven people after an investigation into an explosion on President Abdulla Yameen’s boat led to the discovery of weapons hidden on the sea bed.

The weapons, including two hand grenades, a rifle, a pistol, and more than 100 bullets wrapped in carrier bags were found on the sea bed, at a depth of 45 metres, in the remote Baa Atoll, 130 kilometre northwest of the capital, Male, and were shown to the media on Saturday.
