The Inter University Students’ Federation strongly criticised the manner in which the police handled the situation on Thursday when a group of students demonstrated opposite the University Grants Commission in Ward Place, Colombo.

Convener of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Lahiru Weerasekara says that they will take legal action against the police for assaulting the demonstrators.

He says that the police had reacted in an inhumane manner.

However, refuting the allegations that were levelled against the police,  Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said that the police were acting in their capacity.

Meanwhile, the 39 students who were arrested on Thursday are due to be produced before the Colombo Chief  Magistrate on Friday.

Six police officers were admitted to hospital after sustaining injuries following action taken by police to stop the protest.

The Students Collective to protect the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy commenced their protest march from Colombo Fort demanding an equal recognition as provided to the Bachelor of Commerce.
