Minister of Housing and Construction, Sajith Premadasa says that 38 Udagammana villages will be constructed and vested with the public in the next two months.

The Udagammana, Ardarsha Gammana, Attham Niwasa, Udakala Gammana concepts of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa paved a new path to seek solutions to the housing issue in the country.

The United Nations Organisation too named a World Habitat Day after the housing policies of Late Ranasinghe Premadasa.

The target housing plan that began in 1979 for one hundred thousand houses, progressed to 1.5 million houses in 1993.

Minister for Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa said that he will accept the challenge of reviving the housing development programme that died with the demise of president Ranasinghe Premadasa.

The Minister Housing and Construction said:

This year we hope to create 38 Udagammana villages,with 25 houses in each Udagammana, covering many districts in the island and in this short time span declare them open. We hope to begin today and hand them over the villages to the public on    December 31. And we hope to begin a programme to construct five hundred thousand middle class houses next year.

Government provides a land of 20 perches under this programme inclusive of water facilities, electricity, and roads.

The loan given for the construction of houses under a number of phases is payable within a time span of ten years. The selection of individuals to receive these houses will be done through the divisional secretariats by the District Housing Committee and the Rural Housing Committee.

The Minster further said:

Plots of land will be given to families who do not own them. For every house, we will provide a housing loan worth two hundred thousand rupees. We are initiating this program to include the contribution of the public and that of the benefactor as well and while the benefactor will receive a land of 20 perches, with time a programme will be formulated to hand over complete ownership of the land to the benefactor.

He stated:

We hope to reserve sixty two thousand rupees – amounting to 6.25 million per village according.
