Hambantota Magistrate Isuru Netthikumara, during a case on child abuse case taken up in court on Friday, stated that a DNA report is simply one factor in a case.

The chief suspect in the case where four under-age girls were sexually molested in Ranmuthuwewa, Suriyawewa was produced before the Hambantota Magistrates Court. The magistrate rejected the request for bail made by the attorney-at-law representing the suspect, stating that cognisance must be given to public opinion.

The magistrate also ordered the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter  and stated that suspects will not be released based on the fact that the DNA report does not match. The chief suspect was remanded till November 6, and one of the children was placed under the custody of the Moratuwa Orphanage.

The Magistrate ordered for the other three children to be handed over to their mothers under three separate bonds of one million rupees each and added that the fathers’ appearance in court is mandatory.
