A shooting has taken place in a Chicago household. A six-year-old accidentally shot dead a three-year old.

According to the police, the boys were playing “Cops and Robbers” when the older boy grabbed the gun that was wrapped in pajama pants and stowed on top of a refrigerator and the gun went off, hitting the toddler in the head.

The father of the children, 25-year-old Michael Santiago, now faces felony child endangerment charges and was released from jail Monday after posting bail.

Police had noted that the father had confessed to have purchasing the gun illegally from a gang member for his protection. The State Attorneys Office says that the father had told the investigators that he showed the six-year-old the gun and explained to him that it was only to be used by adults.

At the time of the shooting Saturday, Santiago was at work and the boys’ mother was at the store.

Gun violence and gun laws have been a controversial issues in America. According to statistics, there have been 41,909 gun-related incidents in America and out of which 2679 have been incidents involving children.

This year alone, there have been 274 mass shootings, the most recent one to grip the nation being the mass school shooting in Oregon, where ten people were killed and nine others injured.
