Working Director of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, P.I.T. Mahilal Silva says that quick measures will be taken to provide solutions to the drinking water issue in the Bandagiriya area in Hambantota.

He said that the solutions will be provided, subsequent to discussions with the locals in the area.

A group of officials of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, including its Working Director P.I.T. Mahilal Silva, arrived in the Bandagiriya area and inquired into the drinking water issue from the locals.

Working Director of NWSDB, P.I.T. Mahilal Silva stated that the cabinet has sent a letter stating that quick and active measures must be taken and added that the residents of the area are under the impression that through this letter, the Water Board would take quick measures by obtaining required funds to engage in a programme to provide a solution for the people.

He went on to note that as the programme would take a considerable amount of time, they will suspend the supply of drinking water in order to remove the bacteria and contaminated water with pesticides.

He added that as a quick solution, an international team will also be brought to examine the water of the Bandagiriya lake and ensure the water is 100% suitable for consumption.

On October 12, residents of the Bandagiriya area in Hambantota staged a demonstration demanding for clean drinking water.

They charge that the water supplied through the Bandagiriya Water Supply Scheme is unsuitable for consumption.
