The first test of the two-match series between Sri Lanka and the visiting West Indies team began in Galle today.

Winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to bat first and got off to a steady start with an opening partnership of 56 runs between Kaushal Silva and Dimuth Karunarathne.

Kemar Roach drew first blood for the West Indians, dismissing Kaushal Silva for 17, while an undeterred Karunaratne went on to score his 7th test half century.

Sri Lanka lost its second wicket, shortly before tea, when Lahiru Thirimanne was dismissed for 16 by Devendra Bishoo, with the home team posting 141 runs on the board
