Persons detained over alleged links with LTTE continue hunger strike countrywide

A hunger strike commenced on Monday by detainees accused of having links with the LTTE. The hunger strike which came into effect countrywide, is continuing with inmates demanding that they be released.

Commissioner General of Prisons Rohana Pushpakumara said the hunger strike is being carried out at the Colombo Magazine Prison, Anuradhapura, Batticoloa and Jaffna Prisons

The inmates began their fast on Monday afternoon and are demanding their release. Two hundred and one suspects, including four women, are being detained in prisons under charges of being LTTE cadres or supporting the banned outfit

One hundred and one (101) prisoners are at the Colombo Magazine Prison while thirty are at the Anuradhapura prison.

The others are spread across the Welikada, Bogambara, Trincomalee, Kalutara, Batticoloa, Badulla, Galle, Jaffna, Polonnaruwa and Moneragala Prisons.
