Forests in the Mulliyawalai area in the Mulaitivu District are being cleared, illegally. Northern Provincial Councillor T. Raviharan charges that no measure has been taken to prevent the clearing of the forests.
Forests in the Murippu, Kumarapuram and Wanniyanmedu areas of the Mulliyawalai area are being cleared.
When a proposal on this matter was presented at the previous session of the Northern Provincial Council by Provincial Councillor T. Raviharan, the matter was postponed for the next sitting.
It is a matter of concern to note that no official is taking measures over the destruction of over 500 acres of forest area of the Kumarapuram and Kumalamunai areas which come under the purview of the Eastern Grama Sewa areas of the Mulaitivu – Kuraithuraipatthu Divisional Secretariat.
These lands are thus being encroached upon based on political influence..Measures must be taken to put a stop to this act which is taking place unilaterally.
Of these lands which have been acquired, tents could be witnessed marking its boundaries. Locals say these tents which have been erected have no occupants.
Northern Provincial Councillor T. Raviharan says that these forests are being cleared with the knowledge of a minister. The Northern Provincial Councilor charges that even though the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Central Environmental Authority and the District and Divisional Secretaries are aware of this situation, no measure has been taken to tackle this issue.
