President makes key observations at Teachers’ Day celebrations

Teachers Day was celebrated under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday, October 6 at the BMICH.

Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam stated that they there are around 140,000 extra teachers in the country as a result of improper recruitment in the past.

He went on to note that there are over 2000 excess teachers at national schools alone and therefore they spend 1,000 million rupees a year for these ‘additional teachers.’

President Maithripala Sirisena stated that, taking into consideration the district he represents, which is the Polonnaruwa District, there consists 700 teachers vacancies.

He went on to note that there are 1700 teacher vacancies in the North Central Province. He also added that there is also an issue over suitable teachers for the estates.

School principals and heads of pirivenas were felicitated at the event.
