Min. Senaratne proposes price increases for “harmful food substances”

Minister of Health Rajitha Senaratne said that discussions are afoot, together with the Ministry of Finance, to increase the prices of three types of goods that harm the human body.

The national event to mark World Heart Day was held at the BMICH on Tuesday under the auspices of  Minister Rajitha Senaratne.

Speaking at the event, the Minister said that, during the past century, people have got used to ingest substances that has increased sicknesses by 70 percent in the country. “And we spend money to cure these sicknesses,” observed the Minister.

Minister Senaratne went on to note that the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Finance , the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Education should immediately join  and bring to the attention of the Ministry of Finance to increase tax on sugar, oil and salt, in the same manner that they increased the tax on alcohol and cigarettes.

An event was also held in order to educate how a healthy, yet tasty meal is prepared meal in line with World Heart Day.
