A landslide warning has been issued for six districts with the prevalent inclement weather. The Disaster Management Centre said that the warning was issued to Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts.
The Department of Meteorology says the cyclonic condition that developed in the Western Pacific Ocean Zone had made landfall in China. The Department added that this had led to the rainy weather being experienced across the country.
The Nilwala River broke its banks on Tuesday resulting in many low lying areas in the Matara District being inundated. Akuressa, Kamburupitiya and Mulatiyana were among the inundated areas.
The Bathutha Road in the Matara town was underwater on Tuesday evening. Several areas on the Matara – Akuressa Road were inundated as the water levels of the Nilwala River rose and the Kaduganna area was inundated as the Nape Tank in Thelijjawila broke its banks.
Our correspondent said that the water levels of the Kirama River were on the rise. Several houses in Matota too have been inundated.
Transportation was disrupted as an earth embankment fell on to the Galle – Akuressa Road in Imaduwa on Tuesday evening.
Several villages including Devata, Poddala, Kihimbiya and Gonapura in Galle were inundated.
