The body of another child was found buried under the earth on Saturday morning as a result of the landslide that took place in the Wedamulla Estate in Kotmale.
Seven people lost their lives in the landslide that occurred between 12 noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Among the dead were five members of the same family and included two children.
Seven houses collapsed within minutes, without even allowing the residents to consume their meals or gather their belongings. The people living in the Liliesland Estate in the Wedamulla Estate in Kotmale were used to growing vegetables on the rock face 350 metres away from their houses.
They were compelled to grow vegetables here as their wages did not meet their daily needs. However, the very earth they depended on had taken away their houses for good.
Members of 44 families had fled the area in search of safety and are currently at the Ramboda Hindu College. At present 264 persons from 66 families are temporarily housed there.
However, the pain caused by this natural disaster has not eased as yet as the area continues to experience a downpour. These people have lost all hope and are waiting for someone to give them hope.
