A dialogue on the Sri Lankan elections and the new prospects for US – Sri Lanka relations took place at the Venie- Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Speaking to News1st, Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States, Prasad Kariyawasam stated that US is our best customer and whereas we have not become a good customer to the US.
We have to think informatively how to bridge the trade gap but the supplies for Sri Lanka’s requirements, with regard to the supplies from abroad, are not yet competitive in the US market. So instead, we are looking at greater economic content with the US through better investment and infrastructure investment that may have the potential to bridge the gap.
The Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States added:
Sri Lanka’s plan as to how we will embark on reconciliation and peace building is a part of that process and the government is committed to walk the talk and we think that will succeed. But it will take time because by nature, efforts at reconciliation require time and patience and greater understanding by the community at large.
He further noted:
The period ahead with regard to US – Sri Lanka relations is very encouraging from the prospects that we see after the visit of the Secretary of State to Sri Lanka. And US and Sri Lanka are collaboratively handling the issues in Geneva and the partnership dialogue the two countries envisage to initiate soon is that we bring the US – Sri Lanka relationship into new heights, encompassing economy business and other issues including maritime security.
